Pre Departure: Part 1- Finding a place to stay

Besides research, one of the very first things we did was find a place to live.  My husband is going to school in Bangkok, so that is where we will be most of the time so we wanted an apartment there.  We looked at a lot of places and did a lot of research but found that some of the cheaper options wouldn't be safe for our particular situation.  I read from other accounts that there is faulty wiring that would need to be covered up so little ones wouldn't get electrocuted and there were no smoke detectors.  This was something that I didn't want to have to deal with so we found a nicer place on a website called airbnb.com.

We also happened to have a friend that was there for the summer and we would give her places to check out for us.  We wanted a place that was decent, were we felt safe, and one that was close enough to lots of places so we could walk and easily use public transportation since we wouldn't have a car.  And this is the place that we found!  We are really excited about it!  Our friend said that it was in her favorite part of town and looked like a great place to live.  We also happened to make a friend at a Thai restaurant that was from Thailand.  She checked it out via the website and agreed that it was a great area and that it may be possible to see the Grand Palace (where the King lives) from our apartment window!

We have also used booking.com and agoda.com to find good deals on hotels here in Thailand and also Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, and Myanmar.
