Food in Bangkok... sigh... I have mixed feelings. Several places that I read before I came said to not be surprised if you feel like "you've died and gone to heaven" Thai food is so good. I guess it's good, I wouldn't call it THAT good though. They also said that it is super spicy. Everything we have ordered thus far has not been spicy. But they all came with a spicy addition if you wanted to add it. Tonight, since it was Sunday, I made dinner. I chose a green curry and stir friend chicken and onions to go in it, served with rice. I wasn't expecting it, but it was so spicy, Jason refused to eat it, and it made me sweat pretty bad. I can take a bit of heat, but this was pushing it! It just came from a little seasoning packet. It's not like I added a whole bottle of tabasco or anything. Before I knew it was spicy, I put a teeny bit in Beckham's (18 months) food. It sent him over the top! He was already ornery because of the jet lag and him refusing a nap today. He wouldn't put anything in his mouth afterwards. But we needed to put something sugary in because for some reason, that counteracts the spice. So we put some Melon Fanta in a medicine dropper, pinned him down, and shot it into his mouth. Ha! He calmed down super fast after that and was asleep within the next 5 minutes. Poor guy has super bad diaper rash, and I only brought a little rash cream... I don't know where to buy baking soda AND there is no tub so I couldn't do a baking soda soak unless I put him in the sink. Sigh... this foreign country thing with kids is super hard. As of right now, I'm not sure I would do it again... hopefully my tune will change! We are already figuring out the stroller thing... I will explain later. This post is about food!
Before we got to Thailand, when we were just preparing for it, there were times that thinking about it all sent me into this panic attack. The only thing that would calm me down was thinking about 2 things: one of them is chicken curry soup (something I was going to eat when I got to Thailand) and the other was mango with sticky rice. ☺
This is not a picture of my actual plate of mango and sticky rice (which by the way, we rode a metro and a sky train at 9pm to get), this is a picture I took off of realthairecipes.com, but mine was basically the same. This is delicious! The rice is topped with sweetened condensed milk served with these little crunchy topping things, and of course mango. I fell in love with this stuff at a Thai Restaurant we went to in GA when we lived there summer of 2013.
But we got the sticky rice and mango at a night market called Soi 38. It is this crazy busy little place that looks like this:
Its crowded with food stands, lots of people, and not to mention cars driving through. Not exactly the safest place for kids to be. Luckily we had ours strapped to strollers... we were out late because we were still suffering from jet lag.
This is a beautifully made crepe filled with nutella, bananas, whip cream, chocolate sauce, and my favorite... ICE CREAM!! Why I never thought of putting ice cream in a crepe I have no idea! All topped with almond slices. But this was delicious. I got it at a restaurant in the Food mall on the ground floor of my apartment complex called The Shoppes of Grand Rama 9.
I have been brave and tried 2 fruits... guava, and this! Which is a dragon fruit. I got this because it had a name written out in English. If I know the name, I can google how to eat it. ☺ It is a fruit grown on a cactus. The outside is thick and leathery almost, the inside is white speckled with black seeds throughout. To be honest, its not that good. It tasted like a mix between a kiwi and a water chestnut. It had no flavor and no sweetness to it. I even had to sprinkle it with sugar and it still wasn't that great.
So far, there seems to be a trend with these cafeteria style restaurants. You either trade cash for this food card, or they give you a card that builds a balance, and you pay at the end. This and the next dish was eaten there.
This one is mine... I'm trying to get brave, but it is kind of hard. This is called Chicken Randang. That bowl of red stuff is SUPER spicy! But this was basically a curry with breaded chicken served with sticky rice, these chip things, a hard boiled egg, and the tomato, cucumber, and lettuce you see. It was good. The boys ate most of my rice, those chip things and my hard boiled egg. But this was a big dish and I was planning on sharing. This cost 130 Baht which equals a little less than $4. There are places you can find food for 50 baht which equals $1.50. We need to find those places so I don't have to cook!
This was Jason's dish he got... Chicken Pad Thai. A classic Thai dish. Very safe for tourists frightened of weird and/or spicy Thai food. Will (3 year old) wouldn't eat it though. In fact, not at this cafeteria but another one, I was with Will trying to find something that he would like to eat and I kept pointing to things and asking him if that looked good and he said, "I don't eat bugs mom." What do you say to that?!? Ha!
Pad thai is a noodle dish served with crushed peanuts and bean sprouts. It tastes really good with lime squeezed over the top as well!
Last night we went out with a friend to a Shabu Shabu restaurant (sha-boo). It was one of Jason's favorite restaurants from Japan on his mission. Shabu shabu basically means "splish splash". They give you a pot of boiling... something... maybe it's water or a broth of some sort. They also give you very sliced meats. We got pork and beef. You "splish splash" your meat until it's cooked, then drop it into your choice of 2 sauces right in front of you. They also had a buffet of different vegetable you could get and cook. It was all delicious!
Our experience was kind of funny because the menu was in Thai and Japanese. Jason couldn't read the Japanese and we all couldn't read the Thai. Nobody in the restaurant spoke any English. So nobody knew exactly what was going on! I think because of this, our server stayed within sight and basically stared at us the whole time! AWKWARD! We still had fun and one of the best parts was the boys were asleep the whole time!
